Communication is at the heart of effective support, yet behavior analysts and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) may approach communication from different professional perspectives. This training explores the intersection of behavior analysis and speech-language pathology, including common barriers to collaboration, differences in scope of practice, and the ways each profession conceptualizes language development. Participants will learn about SLP education and training, major theories of language development, typical speech and language development, and areas of specialized SLP expertise. The training will highlight how understanding these perspectives can help behavior analysts communicate more effectively with SLPs, make informed decisions about collaboration and referral, and coordinate services to better support individuals with communication needs.
Participants will:
- Review information related to five philosophies of speech and language development
- Identify four milestones related to speech and language development
- State three considerations associated with AAC assessment and intervention
- Examine a practical framework for improved collaboration between SLPs and BCBAs
