We all use a variety of visual strategies to cope with time management and the multiple commitments of our daily lives. For example, we set up a reminder in our smart phone in order to assure we make it to the dentist on time. Many behavioral strategies have been used to teach the skill sequence of “following” a schedule. However, many interventionists lose sight of the long-term goal of schedule following: independent transitioning from activity to activity throughout the day. Learners become dependent on prompts such as “Check your schedule” and, therefore, continue to rely on supervision to follow the schedule. Virtually every schedule involves a single column of pictures. This arrangement implies a promise from the teacher to the student regarding the future.
During this workshop we will offer several variations to this arrangement that reflects a more realistic future and the acquisition of skills necessary in a changing world. We will describe strategies for teaching independent schedule following and attendees may even be surprised to learn how we teach learners to accept the uncertainties of life!
